Ruth (Searles) Rue — Stewartville

Ruth A. Rue, 83, of Stewartville, died on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center.

Ruth Ann Searles was born Dec. 30, 1930, to Clarence and Stella (Dickerman) Searles on the family farm west of Elgin.

She was raised on the farm, attended country school the first three grades and graduated from Elgin High School in 1948. She was proud to be part of a group of classmates that remained close into their adult years. She was quite the tomboy growing up, preferring to be outside working, riding her horse bareback or climbing trees.

At the age of 19, Ruth went west with girlfriends to Spokane, Wash., where she met and married Ardell (Art) Rue. Art's job with Greyhound took them to Albuquerque, N.M., where they raised their three children.

Ruth and Art were later divorced. Ruth worked 21 years at the University of New Mexico, retiring as Chemistry Department Secretary. She had fond memories and stories of grad students from around the world and co-workers.

Ruth loved the Sandia Mountains and enjoyed hiking and skiing as a member of the New Mexico Mountain club. Her health prompted her to return to Minnesota in 2010 to live closer to her daughter and granddaughter.

Ruth enjoyed traveling, including cruises to Alaska and Mexico. She was fortunate to have a close friend who loved to travel as she did. They covered much of the western United States and northwest Canada in a motor home.

Ruth is survived by her children, Sander Ardell (Wendy) Rue, of Albuquerque, N.M.; David Wayne (Sherie Williamson) Rue, of Tijeras, N.M., and Ellen Mary (Kevin) Wellik, of Stewartville.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Sander E., Chelsea, Jarryd, Braden and Madisyn; and one stepgranddaughter, Christie. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ellen, a brother, Wayne, and nephew, Eugene, all of Elgin.

As per her wishes, she was cremated. There will be a private family gathering in Albuquerque at a later date.Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
