Wendy Patricia Southorn — Rochester

Wendy Patricia Southorn, 70, of Rochester, died at her home Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, after a long struggle with brain cancer.

Wendy was born May 12, 1943, in England, to Frederick and Kathleen (Randall) Archer. Because her father was a diplomat, Wendy spent much of her childhood growing up in various countries in the Middle East and Europe. She graduated with honors in nursing from University College Hospital (London University) in 1965. Her subsequent nursing career included employment at the Mayo Clinic.On April 27, 1968, she married Dr. Peter Southorn.

She is survived by her husband and three children, Thomas of Boise, Idaho, Vicki (Jeb) Binns of Burien, Wash., and Richard (Mara) of Naperville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Abigail, Charlotte and Max; her mother; brother, David (Sue); niece, Kirsty (David McWilliams); nephew, Jonathan; and other cherished family members.

Her father preceded her in death.

Wendy brought joy, wit, enthusiasm and a zest for life to each and every one of her multiple interests. She cherished the great outdoors, the chance to travel and reading. She was active in her church. Recent interests included learning to play the piano, birding, bridge and rug hooking. Most of all, she loved company and was a loyal friend to many. Her favorite quote and one she lived by was "to have a friend you must be a friend." Wendy was a good person.

Her husband and children would like to thank all her wonderful friends and the professionals who helped care for Wendy.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, 111 Third Ave. S.W., Rochester. A light lunch will follow in Crawford Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest memorials to the Mayo Clinic Hospice, the Zollman Zoo in Oxbow Park (Friends of Oxbow, 5731 County Road 105N, Byron, MN 55920) or any other endeavor you believe will make the world a better place.
