And Wanamingo was his name-o

DFL Gov. Mark Dayton has got a new puppy and he has chosen to name it after a southeast Minnesota city. Wanamingo or "Mingo" officially moved into the Governor's Mansion on Sunday.

The governor had posted a request on his Facebook page looking for a German Shepherd puppy.  It read: "You've heard of an RFP: a Request For Proposal. Well, I'm putting out my own RFP: Request For a Puppy! I'm looking for a female German shepherd puppy, just born or on the way, preferably all-black (like my Dakota and Mesabi), or close to it. Please let me know, if you see her around!"

One of the governor's German shepherds — Dakota — died of cancer in January.

So why the name Wanamingo? Speaking last month to the Rochester on Tour participants, Dayton said he noticed the city's unique name on a map while campaigning across the state this summer. He thought it would make the perfect name for a dog. If you are in need of your daily cute puppy fix, check out the video that goes with this Star Tribune story .
