Answer Man: Why doesn't Rochester have an IHOP?

Was there once an IHOP in Rochester?

IHOP, as serious pancake fans know, is International House of Pancakes, a longtime favorite out East but less well-known in the Midwest. Newsrooms are generally hotbeds of hotcake fans, and no one here can remember an IHOP restaurant, nor can we find evidence of it in clips or old phone books.

The company also says there was never an IHOP in Rochester. Several are planned for Minnesota in the next few years, but Rochester’s not yet on the griddle. Apparently we don’t stack up.

How many fire hydrants are there in the city of Rochester? Are residents charged for having a fire hydrant on their property?

Dogs, rejoice! Rochester had 5,745 fire hydrants (in 2003), according to Julie Moenck, communications coordinator for Rochester Public Utilities. She says 5,619 of those are public hydrants, while 128 are private hydrants for business use.

Regarding Question No. 2, Moenck said residents aren’t charged for having a fire hydrant on their property. The Community Fire Protection charge approved this summer by the Rochester City Council collects $1 per month from every city homeowner to pay for the fire protection system.
