In these closing days before the election, our airwaves and mailboxes are filled with attack ads paid for by special interests vying for power and influence. Attacks are partisanship at its worst. Attack ads distort the truth and damage more than the candidates. They damage democracy by discouraging us as voters and citizens.
Our democracy needs elected officials who remember that their primary job is to represent all the people, not just their party or political supporters. We need elected officials who base their decisions on what is best for our communities, and are willing to make the hard decisions, even when they are not popular. We need elected officials who reflect the values of everyone in our communities and are not controlled by their party or special interests.
For the local critics and outside groups attacking Kim Norton, Andy Welti and Ann Lynch, it is just about partisanship and winning seats for Republicans. They distort the record on these legislators.
I do not always agree with Norton, Welti, and Lynch, but it is clear they are champions for our communities’ initiatives, take their responsibilities seriously, and work tirelessly on our behalf.
Let’s remember that when we go to the polls.
