By the way, the verdict is in, and the Strib did blow it

By the way, the verdict is in, and the Strib did blow it

Regarding my question of a few weeks ago , the record is now clear that the Star Tribune went off half-cocked (pardon the expression) regarding the Favre retirement non-story. Arguably, we did, too, in that we ran what the Strib and wire passed along.

Strib sports writers such as Jim Souhan can say all they want about how there's "no doubt" the reports were correct, but obviously, whatever grain of truth or scrap of text message existed to trigger the avalanche of coverage, it clearly hasn't been borne out by events -- he denies he's retiring. He still might, of course, and eventually he will, so the Strib can claim vindication at that time, but for now, that wave of coverage was grossly overplayed.

Has anyone expressed regrets?

I do, for our running with what the Strib provided, without adding qualifiers such as "Report: Favre to retire."
