Closing of the Plummer Building doors
On Tuesday, Mayo Clinic will close the giant ornamental bronze doors on the Plummer Building in honor of Sister Generose Gervais. She died Friday at the age of 97.
For the history minded folks out there, here's a partial list of some of the other times each of the 4,000 pound doors were closed:
• Jan. 9, 2012: The doors were closed then in memory of a Mayo Clinic helicopter crew of three who died in a December 2011 crash.
• September 2001: The doors were closed to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
• 1963: They closed to memorialized the death of John F. Kennedy.
• 1939: They closed when each of the Mayo brothers died.
Bonus historic fact: The various figures of the heavily ornamented doors include a happy elephant and a sad donkey as a reference to the 1928 presidential election. Republican Hoover defeated Democrat Al Smith.
