Paul Scott deserves praise for doing the research to follow up in his Nov. 1 column on the school board proposal that would allow advertising in our public schools.
When I read that the editorial board at the P-B supported this prostituting of our schools, I was appalled. Scott was right on when he wrote abut the problems of marketing in this way to our children. I used to teach sociology, and from the reading that I have done, Scott hit the mark when he described the affects on kids. The fact that the P-B decided to support this proposal without apparently doing any research to learn how our children are affected is disturbing indeed.
When my kids were in school I served on committees trying to get the schools involved in serving nutritious food. Then came selling Pepsi in vending machines. Now this. Really, does it all come down to money?
I am older now, my kids are grown, my voice is less important. It is great to see that parents like Scott are still taking time to speak up when they see injustices. Also, thank you, Mr. Scott, for reminding the P-B it is not OK to endorse a proposal that is not in the best interest of our children. Perhaps we can get them to retract and admit they had not thought this through before going to print.
