Does the publisher get to choose columnists?

Here's the short version: New publisher takes over at a small Iowa weekly -- she tells the editor to quit running a liberal editorial page columnist, the editor refuses and quits in protest.

Does the publisher have the right to shape the editorial page of the paper, especially at a small-town weekly where (in her opinion) a columnist is way out of touch with the community? Absolutely.
