Former speaker Irv Anderson dies

Former Minnesota House Speaker Irv Anderson died today.   Anderson, who was 85, retired from the Minnesota House of Representatives following the 2006 legislative session.   He was a longtime state leader who first ran for office in 1964.

"Irv Anderson lived a life dedicated to service, whether as a decorated Navy pilot in World War II, a concerned citizen or as a state leader," said House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher.   "Throughout his legislative career, he remained a forceful voice for his constituents and working Minnesotans across the state."

Anderson served nearly a quarter century in the Minnesota House of Representatives, including terms as both Speaker and Majority Leader.   He was first elected to represent his northern Minnesota district in the 1960s and then returned to the House in 1991.

"It is hard to imagine a time or an issue in our state’s recent history that did not benefit from Irv Anderson’s leadership," said House Majority Leader Tony Sertich.     "While he was known as a leader on the outdoors and tax policy, he was also extremely proud of his recent work to help create a state memorial to his fellow World War II veterans."

Anderson is survived by his wife Phyllis and two children who were ever present in his life.   He worked as a paper inspector at an International Falls paper mill.   Much of his free time was spent outdoors at a favorite Rainy Lake fishing spot or hunting in the woods.
