The computer giant employed 8,500 people in Essex Junction as recently as 2001. The latest job cuts bring the figure to 5,400 — the lowest in more than two decades.

The job cuts affect 110 regular positions and 70 long-term supplemental employees, company spokesman Jeff Couture said. No other positions will be affected, either through wage reductions or benefit reductions, he said.

"We are addressing business needs: to rebalance skills that we have and to reduce costs, to improve efficiency and to respond to the evolving market conditions," Couture said Tuesday.
