Immigrants shouldn't have to abandon religious beliefs

This is in response to Leon Eggers' letter in the July 3 Post-Bulletin. He is totally wrong on several points. There is nothing wrong with gay people getting married, or even with being gay, and I say this as a straight person who knows a number of gay people. It's not a choice, but a condition.

Some Supreme Court judges make excellent sense when making decisions, some do not. Most make a variety of decisions, some of them good, and some bad. The same can be said for every other group of people on earth.

What really gets to me, however, is his problem with "people from all over the world coming to this country." My ancestors came to this country from other countries many years ago, and except for American Indians, so did everyone else's ancestors. Our ancestors, collectively, took this land away from the Indians, and as Americans, that is something we must never forget.

I do agree that once here, those from other countries should learn our language and our customs, but far be it from me to insist that they abandon their religious beliefs.
