Kids will understand the need for armed guards in schools

I feel for the kids, teacher and staff in our unprotected schools. All of the schools I've worked in had ex-military men or women on staff, people who were well-trained in the use of weaponry. I believe all of them would have risked their lives to protect our children and grandchildren. As a veteran of the Korean War, I know I would.

Still, it is unconscionable to expect our teachers to defend their students against a deranged, heavily armed individual.

Authorities now believe that the gunman in Connecticut stopped firing at the kids when he heard the sound of approaching sirens. Instead, he used one of the guns on himself, perhaps sparing scores of children. It is hard to imagine how much worse this carnage might have been.

Kids today would understand the necessity of armed security in our schools. I don't think we give them enough credit for what they know and can understand.

We owe it to our kids, our grandchildren and ourselves to make this happen. The right to bear arms is more important than ever. The government should not focus on taking guns away from good people, but on keeping people safe and providing treatment for the mentally ill.
