Lawmakers acknowledged for support of licensed family child care

Family Child Care Inc. of Olmsted County would like to thank state Sen. Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, and state Rep. Kim Norton, DFL-Rochester, for their work with our association to make notable improvements in licensed family child care regulations.

Norton and Nelson personally authored and guided our bill successfully through the legislative process. Most notably, we were able to improve and reduce redundancies for required background studies of independent contractors who offer services to multiple family child care programs. This will result in a reduction of the cost to Minnesota counties when conducting background studies and also make the contractors more readily available to family child care programs.

This bill also improves access to required training for Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Syndrome and abusive head trauma by expanding the approved training format to include on-line courses and also by making the annual requirements consistent with each other, which is a tremendous benefit for Greater Minnesota providers who have limited access to the required training.

Lastly, previous legislation regarding infant safe sleep space now clarifies when a corrective action can or cannot be issued. FCCI thanks Norton and Nelson for their partnership on our bill and their support of licensed family child care as a profession.
