I am disappointed in 5th Ward Council Member Mark Hickey’s vote at Monday night’s City Council meeting and his "explanation" of why he voted that way. As my representative on the council, his conduct is not consistent with his constituents’ beliefs.
As a woman, an active duty Army veteran, a mother and a human being, I am offended that he would take such a petty, backward-facing position. This is a no-brainer. He made the wrong choice.
When we talk about smashing the patriarchy, Mr. Hickey and those who agree with his antiquated, sexist views are what we are referring to.
It is my fervent hope that the many people who agree that the language change was necessary will work toward change in Ward 5 and that Mr. Hickey, in casting this vote, has orchestrated his own defeat.
