There recently have been many articles in the Post-Bulletin about affordable housing. However, no one has ever put a price tag on what is considered affordable housing.
If you are working at a job that pays less than $15 an hour, an affordable house would be one that is less than $150,000 or so. In my neighborhood, most of the houses in the surrounding area are less than $200,000, and there are currently four foreclosure houses near where I live.
If you were lucky enough to buy a house for less than $150,000, I can assure you it would need many home improvements.
Everywhere you look, the houses being built cost $250,000 or more. This is not affordable housing for those who need it most. Apartments are also out of reach, and many are run down and need many things.
So, when we talk about affordable housing, let's talk dollars and cents, not just words.
