I am writing to express my disappointment in the Rochester City Council for raising taxi rates again. In January the rates went up almost 40 percent, and now less than eight months later, they are going up again. I understand it had been a long time since the rates had been increased and a raise was probably due, but why so much so quickly?
One thing the council did that I thought was great was to require all cab drivers to take the Certified Tourism Ambassador class. This class trains people to be ambassadors for our wonderful city. After the drivers learn to do this, we turn around and gouge the fantastic guests and residents of our fine city with these new taxi fares.
Let's be honest. Most people who take cabs are either guests or patients of Mayo Clinic, people who don't have cars or people who have been drinking and are responsible enough to take a cab instead of driving. Most of these people are not overly wealthy.
I'm writing this letter hoping that those who read it might agree with me and let the council know we would like them to reconsider this increase. Ask yourself WWMD — what would the Mayo brothers do?
