Last month, I wrote a letter about a project my high schooler spent $30 to build. I brought up the difficulty of some families being able to afford a project like this.
The high school physics teacher responsible for the project was kind enough to give me a call and explain that the school does have free supplies for those students that wish to use them. Students are also given the option to build more-involved projects but are not required to do so.
He assured me that the staff is keenly aware of the economic pressures too many of our families face today. He and the staff are continually vigilant to minimize the effect that has on students in the classroom. Many teachers even purchase supplies with their own money.
I am so appreciative of the teachers we have in Rochester, and I would encourage parents and non-parents alike to reach out to the teachers and offer their assistance in any way possible before, as I did, writing a letter to the editor. I know I will certainly will next time.
