Letter: Soldiers need to have access to all resources when fighting in war

I was watching the news on the president's visit to Japan when a poll came up that stated more people were in disfavor than favored the use of the atomic bomb to end the war with Japan. This attitude has swayed the thinking of our Department of Defense and other policymakers in our country.

When I fought in Vietnam, a new phrase was put forth by our leaders. It was "rules of engagement." Me being an underling, but a witness to the effect of this policy, would venture to guess that this policy was probably responsible for about 20 percent of the deaths in that war.

The rule has probably been the cause of more deaths in all the wars to follow. I was in the Marines and had friends, now gone, who fought in the islands on the way to Japan who said that the atomic bomb saved at least 100,000 of our men and countless Japanese soldiers.

I am not a hawk on war, but the people in this country need to understand that if we are committing soldiers to a war zone, they should be able to use all their resources to fight it.

The people who Introduced the policy saying you can't shoot at enemies until they shoot at you are the most disliked and stupid people in these United States.
