This letter is paid content. To put it bluntly, Congressman Hagedorn manipulates the conversation of constituents on his Facebook pages. He appears to be using a screening tool so that the system automatically hides nearly every incoming comment. People are unaware because they can still see their own comments. This allows Congressman Hagedorn or his staff to be selective about which comments to make public.
He lets many comments through, even many critical ones. But sometimes he uses his screening process to manipulate the dialogue and curtail critical comment. Some important counterpoints never become part of the public discussion. Erroneous impressions to his advantage are created.
That happened to me recently when I initially posted a comment asking him about his own financial disclosures when I could not find his on the Clerk of the House’s 2020 report. He said I was incorrect. My attempts to clarify my meaning remain hidden. But a later snide comment about me made by another person was made public.
It’s not an accident. He’s done it before to me and to others. I’ve been keeping track. There are good, relevant comments and rebuttals made by constituents that have never been made public on his Facebook pages. It is particularly distressing when it happens on his official Congressman Jim Hagedorn page which should be an open and visible public record for all of his constituents.
It’s so very subtle that unless you have the means to look for it, you aren’t going to notice. It’s also secretive, manipulative, and dishonorable.
