Heartfelt thanks to the Rochester City Council president and council members for their unanimous vote to ban wild and exotic animal acts in Rochester.
More than half a decade ago, a Gallop poll showed that 69% of Americans were concerned about the treatment of animals in circuses. Since then, circuses including Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey have closed, and restrictions on the use of wild animals in traveling shows have been enacted in 43 states.
The council action illustrates Rochester's leadership, protection and its truly elevating goal of compassion. Minnesota's "City of Compassion" sets a standard for all Minnesota cities to follow.
