Earth Day is always an exciting time of year. It is a time when we celebrate the life that Earth provides and remember how fragile and delicate our planet is. This year, we are especially excited for Earth Day because we know that there is a solution to one of our planet’s most pressing issues, climate change. This solution is called the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (HR 2307). The act sets a fee on carbon that is collected at the point of extraction. The proceeds are then distributed to every U.S. household as a monthly dividend to offset higher energy costs during the transition to cleaner, and cheaper renewable sources. The majority of Americans will break even or come out financially ahead.
This policy will decrease America’s carbon pollution and control climate change while unleashing America’s innovation and ingenuity. As young people, climate change is an important issue to us and something that we are rapidly trying to remedy. This market-based approach gives us hope that Congress can come to a bipartisan agreement on climate change. We ask that U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn become a part of the solution and support HR 2307.
