The jury’s verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial was just announced. I was completely satisfied with that verdict because having served on two criminal juries I am confident that the jury’s members did their very best to dispassionately determine the facts and apply the law to those facts.
However, I would have been equally satisfied with a verdict of acquittal on all counts for the same reason, as gut-wrenching as it was to watch the video of Chauvin squatting on George Floyd. That is why Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s celebration of the outcome rather than the process will guarantee continued civil unrest each time a verdict displeases an impassioned group of people.
