Republican Sen. Carla Nelson, in her Aug. 8 column about her "DMC vision," either demonstrated what it means to have your legislative cake and eat it, too — or she simply proved that she needs to have her eyes, ears and memory checked.
While many will be pleased to see Carla's belatedreturn as cheerleader for Destination Medical Center, she is askingtoo much of us togive her credit for that whichthe senator(when her ownvote counted) could not support. Being a "co-sponsor" of something which your "anti-taxation" politicalideologydoesn't allow you to actually vote for does not give you bragging rights to the legislative victory.
Those of us who count ourselves as supporters of Mayo mustremind ourselves of thoserecent facts, and those of us who are alsovoters mustdecide how to respond in kind at the next election.
As Nelson noted, it does take "a shared vision to secure Rochester's status as the world's premier medical center," but it also requires some profiles in the kind oflegislative courage, which were sorely lacking among most ofour GOP elected officials.
