NRCC chairman talks politics, gas prices

As gas prices have risen, Brian Davis, the endorsed GOP candidate for Congress, has escalated his attacks on DFL Rep. Tim Walz for opposing both offshore drilling and opening up ANWR to oil exploration. At a press conference today, joined by National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole, Davis reiterated his criticisms of Walz, while supporters held up signs reading, "Drill Here! Drill Now!"

"We're very concerned that Congressman Walz and others in Congress do not have an energy policy that will help the residents of southern Minnesota," D avis said.

Walz argues that Davis' charge is a red herring and that oil companies already have 68 million acres of leased area to explore.

The debate is certain to continue, but the NRCC chairman's presence at the press event in Rochester was intriguing. As chairman, Cole's job is to get Republicans elected to Congress. His presence suggested that the 1st Congressional race is on the GOP radar screen and that they are determined to take the seat back.

Davis, however, must first defeat state Sen. Dick Day in the Sept. 9 primary.
