Here's another reason why motorcycles are louder than they ought to be:

Following up on my item in Thursday's You Asked regarding mufflers on motorcycles, reader Tim wrote:

I read the article on noisy bikes and felt compeled to tell you the MAIN reason people put on loud pipes is to stay alive. Its a fact that loud pipes save lives. Loud noises get people’s attention, therefore you and your bike are noticed and there’s less of a chance that someone on a cell phone or otherwise distracted driver will run you over.

I've been riding motorcycles for 40 years and one of the reasons I'm still alive are my loud pipes. I've always had them and I always will. I'll pay a fine if necessary but my pipes are staying on.
