Proposed voter ID law will not deter felons
The Minnesota Legislature's quest for a voter identification law seems like a classic case of a solution looking for a problem.
The incidence of voter fraud in Minnesota has never been statistically significant, yet Republicans — including local Reps. Mike Benson and Steve Drazkowski — feel compelled to spend precious legislative time and scarce dollars on this boondoggle.
Even high school students know how to obtain fake ID cards, so the proposed law will not deter felons intent on committing fraud. But the bill will cost the state and/or counties millions of dollars. Even worse, it will disenfranchise vulnerable, but qualified, citizens. This bill should be defeated.
