Our family, and Denny Hanson's supporters from all over our city, believe a special election is critical for the future of this city. It would give interested candidates, including the one on the ballot, a fair chance to run for this office.
A few people are complaining about the possible cost of a special election, but we disagree. The city budget this year is $162 million. In four years, the cost of the special election ends up being just .01 percent of those budgets.
That is one hundredth of 1 percent!
It's well worth the expense, given the dollars the council oversees. The city council president is considered the most powerful position in our community. We do not believe the election for this position, to serve for the next four years, should be determined by Denny’s untimely death.
Shouldn't we, as voters, choose the most qualified person we can to oversee how our taxpayer dollars are used? A special election will do just that. Please vote for my dad, Denny Hanson, on Nov. 6.
