The Champ is here (at Somerby, that is)

It's about 1 p.m. Monday and things are pretty quiet at Somerby Golf Club, at least on the course. Players will slowly trickle in this afternoon and tomorrow. There's also a Monday qualifier going on up at Hastings Country Club today. More than 150 guys are playing for 14 spots in this week's Showdowan at Somerby . To follow today's qualifier, click here. It looks like about half the field is finished, and right now a familiar name is the lead. Edina native Matt Anderson, a former Gopher, blistered the course for a 10-under 62.

I just finished talking with NCAA Division I national champion Jamie Lovemark , a 19-year-old from the University of Southern California. He had the course all to himself.

He' has quite a story for a such a young player. He started playing golf at about 15 or 18 months, he said, hitting a ball around his backyard with the big plastic golf clubs that every kid has (or should have).

Jamie's dad, Gary, grew up in Robbinsdale, Minn., and played basketball at the University of Minnesota for one year before transferring to Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, where he finished out his eligibility.

Jamie has won some big-time junior and amateur events, and you can read more about him in Tuesday's Post-BUlletin.

Jamie's dad, Gary, is here with him this week. Gary said he doesn't have any family left in Minnesota, but he and Jamie took a drive along US 61 on Sunday. They went up to Lake City and, along the way, Jamie got to try his hand at fishing.
