Watertower's exterior needs attention for city's image, health

As a Rochester resident, I would like to share my concerns regarding the unsanitary-looking water tower at Apache Mall. Since this summer, the bottom half of the water tower's exterior has been covered with a black and green substance that resembles fungi or algae. As of this fall, most of the unsightly black and green growth is still on the tower. I have a few concerns I want to voice about this growth.

First, this is our public water supply. We consume and use this water for our daily needs.

Second, Rochester is a world-famous medical destination city, ranked No. 1 in the world because of the Mayo Clinic. We receive visitors from all over the world, and the Apache Mall water tower is a landmark visible to many. It would be a courtesy to our visiting guests to maintain Rochester's clean and sanitary environment, including our landmarks.

Finally, I believe we need preventative control measures. I wonder if a small pond nearby could be a contributing factor to the problem.

It's already October. If we don't take any action about this black and green growth on our water tower, what will it look like by summer?
