Robert Books - Erie, Colo.

Robert "Bob" Books passed away peacefully at Hospice Care surrounded by his children on Dec. 12, 2011, at the age of 75.

Bob was born in Red Wing, Sept. 11, 1936, to Kenneth and Cosy Books, and was the youngest of three children.  His family lived in Ft. Dodge and Rochester, in his preschool years, and then moved to Chicago, where he lived until he was 10. Eventually, the family moved back to Rochester, and Bob participated in track and wresting at Rochester High School. His senior year he moved to Butterfield, and graduated from Butterfield High School in 1955. After graduating, he attended Rochester Junior College. While attending school, he married the love of his life, Ivalla Miner, at "The Little Brown Church" in Nashua, Iowa, on Aug. 9, 1956. Together they welcomed their four children: Jackie, Craig, Jessie and Jenny. Bob started working with IBM in 1957and eight years later was transferred to Boulder, Colo. Bob had a successful career at IBM. He spent most of his years working in finance, and later became the manager of salary and benefits for the Boulder division.

He retired in 1990 at the age of 53, celebrating with his family at the Trail Dust Steakhouse.  Bob, knowing that the steakhouse was notorious for cutting off the ties of customers, had each family member wear one of his ties as a farewell to his conventional suit-wearing days. After retiring, he worked as a consultant for IBM and in the late '90s as the CFO for Six Sigma and Associates.

As a young father, Bob enjoyed many activities with his family, including skiing, golf and swimming. He coached his son's little league team, and would partake in almost any game or activity that his kids would play. He spent many summers camping with his family at the Bar K Ranch, where they would race tubes across lakes, fish, play darts and compete in makeshift obstacle courses.

Bob was an avid golfer, but developed a true passion for running. He ran in the very first Bolder Boulder in 1979 at North Boulder Park, and his running continued as he trained for numerous races and marathons over the next 10 years. He enjoyed training for marathons with his running buddies, sometimes running from his Boulder home to as far as Ft. Lupton.

After retiring, Bob and his wife moved to Fort Collins, Colo., where they golfed in the summer and cross-country skied in the winter.  It was during this time they traveled to the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Texas and Florida to visit siblings. They also took numerous road trips playing golf and spending time together. In 1995, Bob and his wife moved to Louisville, Colo., to be closer to family, grandkids and friends, and enjoyed many celebrations in the years that followed.

Bob loved his Denver Broncos, and in later years the Colorado Rockies. Some of his best times were sitting with the family and cheering on the Broncos all clad in their orange crush T-shirts.

Bob had many interests, including; woodworking, music, science fiction and astronomy, but was best known for his sense of humor. In fact, for many years his youngest daughters were convinced that he was a professional comedian.

Bob adored his wife, Ivy, and in 2006 renewed his wedding vows with her, surrounded by his children and grandchildren at Gold Lake Resort.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Ivy, and his sister, Lael Wilcox.

He is survived by four children, Jackie Ross (Bill), Craig Books (Mary Kay), Jessie Krammes (Richard) and Jenny Lucas (Don); as well as his brother, Arlen Books, of Rochester; his grandchildren, Jessica, Dylan, Chloe, Savannah, Sophie and Josephine; his great-granddaughter, Ivy; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bob's family would like to thank all the friends, extended family and medical professionals who have offered and given their loving support over these past few years.

His immediate family will be holding a private service.
