MILLTOWN, Wis. -- A Rochester native and his flight instructor died Sunday when their twin-engine plane crashed in a wooded area in northwestern Wisconsin, authorities said.
Stephen Edward Hollenhorst, 44, a graduate of Mayo High School, was within two hours of his twin-engine commercial certification, according to his brother, Michael Hollenhorst, who said he was notified about the crash from authorities.
The crash of the Beechcraft airplane happened about 3:15 p.m. Sunday about three miles northeast of Milltown in a rural area, Polk County Sheriff Dan Mosay said. Milltown is in west central Wisconsin, about 10 miles from the Minnesota border.
The flight instructor's name was not available this morning.
Hollenhorst's survivors include his wife, Carla Barwinek, and two daughters of Roseville, Minn; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert W. Hollenhorst of Rochester; and two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mueller-Bies Funeral Home in Roseville.
