Ruben J. Helgeson, 86, of Mabel, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
Ruben was born Nov. 10, 1924, in rural Canton, to Albert and Stella (Johnson) Helgeson. He attended school in Amherst and Canton. On July 8, 1950, he married Dorothy Blagsvedt at the Elstad Lutheran Church. They lived in Lenora until moving to Mabel in 1975 and have resided there since. Ruben worked for the Fillmore County Highway Department for 36 years until retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the Henrytown Lutheran Church and enjoyed children, visiting, hunting, fishing, trapping, and playing cards.
Ruben is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Mabel; two children, Steven (Chris) of Mabel and Linda (Dale) Klabo of Winona; two grandchildren, Dana (Christian) Kauphusman of Winona and Seth Shirley of Minneapolis; one great-granddaughter, Aleah Kauphusman; two sisters, Marge (Ordell) Garness of Winona and Ruby Amdahl of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Harmony, with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, and one hour prior to services at the church.
