Rochester Century senior Seth Massot, shown here winning the All-City Invitational last fall, is one of the top runners back in Rochester and Section 1AA this season.

CENTURY PANTHERS

Head coach: Paul Callahan. Assistants: Brian Purrington, Jens Boyum, Justin Kotajarvi, Josiah Swanson.

Season outlook: The defending Section 1AA champion Panthers will be captained by a strong group of four seniors, two of whom competed at the Class AA state meet last fall, where Century finished ninth out of 16 teams. Seth Massot (45th at state) and Matt Ryan (121st) both ran at state; Andrew Schweyen and Jack O'Hara will be the team's other captains. Massot could challenge for a section title this season; he placed third last year. Coach Callahan said newcomer Antonio Judson and junior Zeke Green will likely round out the team's top four, with Colin Weber, Schweyen, Josh Larson and Mark Lucivansky battling for the remaining varsity spots.

Coach says: "I cannot say enough positive things about the quality of our athletes on the team in sportsmanship and behavior at meets. At the end of races, our runners will make a line past the finish line and congratulate each runner who comes through the finish. They have decided to do this as a group without any prompting from us as coaches, and shows the respect that each runner earns as every athlete that finishes a race regardless of team, knows what the other runners are going through. Each year, the runners on our team inspire me to become a better coach, and a better runner myself. They are amazing individuals who have chosen a crazy sport to pursue."

JOHN MARSHALL ROCKETS

Head coach: Colette Diedrich. Assistant: Aaron Worth.

Season outlook: The Rockets have four runners back from last season's team that placed 10th in the Section 1AA meet. They lost top runner Jake Houghton (9th in Section 1AA, 28th at state), but return their Nos. 2-5 runners from the section meet. That group includes seniors Kevin Andrews (34th in Section 1AA meet) and Andrew Jones (88th), junior Sam Sonnabend (82nd) and sophomore Mitch Olson (66th). JM will be able to develop some runners for future seasons, too, as it has just two seniors on the roster — Andrews and Jones.

LOURDES EAGLES

Head coach: Katie Stinson. Assistant: Heather Phillips.

Season outlook: Coach Stinson has high hopes and expectations for the Eagles this season, after a sixth-place finish at last year's Section 1A meet. They lost state meet qualifier Dakota Streit (6th in Section 1A meet, 36th at state), but have their next four runners back this season. That group is led by junior captain Ian Dewey (36th in Section 1A meet). Other top runners back include junior Dominic Sieve (47th) and sophomores David Bauer (64th) and Peter Monk (68th). Stinson said Dewey has his goals set high and he should be a good role model and leader for younger runners.

Coach says: "For our varsity squad, I think our boys are hungry this year to be a contender for a top-five finish team in both the HVL and in Section 1A. Overall we just need to get/keep everyone healthy, have fun, and keep our focus on those goals throughout the next few months."

MAYO SPARTANS

Head coach: Brett Carroll.  Assistants: Sarah Osberg, Jane Brandt.

Season outlook: The Spartans are coming off an seventh-place finish in the Section 1AA meet. They had just one senior in the lineup in that meet, Cole Geschwind, who placed 22nd. Mayo was led in that meet by Chad Couser, who earned a top-10 finish at the Section 1AA meet by placing eighth. Couser went on to place 82nd at state. He is in his fifth season on the varsity and will be a team leader for Mayo. Junior Andrew Gathje, senior Jack Mallman and sophomore Spencer Moore should round out Mayo's top four.

Coach says: "We will need our top four, along with someone else, to step it up as the season progresses. We will need more depth if we want to be running past the section meet in Minnesota. Couser has been a fixture on the varsity since 2011 and is now entering his senior season. He is coming off a trip to the state meet as an individual last year and would like to return with the Mayo team."

ROCHESTER HOME SCHOOL

Head coach: Wayne Dickie.

Season outlook: Most of the Jaguars' top runners from a year ago are back, led by No. 1 runner Josiah Eide and Evan Ouverson, who is expected to be the team's No. 2 runner. Coach Dickie says a handful of other runners are not far behind and will compete for varsity spots. A majority of the team's top runners are underclassmen.

Coach says: "We may be a year or two away from our full potential, but we anticipate a very positive season. It appears the hard work over the summer is helping each of them and we are excited to see what they can do against the strong competition in southern Minnesota."
