Aney to present award on Cartoon Network

Being named the Sports Illustrated Kids 2010 SportsKid of the Year has meant one adventure after another for Rochester's Jessie Aney.

The seventh-grader was honored back in November with that award, which has meant several trips and a cover on Sports Illustrated for Kids in December. Now she will be in Los Angeles this weekend as part of the filming for the Cartoon Network's "Hall of Game."

The Cartoon Network has viewers vote on a number of annual awards. As the SI Sports Kid of the Year, Aney will get to present the Best Female Athlete award on a television show. The nominees for the award are are Danika Patrick(auto racing), Lindsey Vonn(skiing), Michelle Wie(golf) and Serena Williams(tennis).

The show will be filmed on Monday and it is scheduled to be aired on the Cartoon Network on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.

Micah Hegerleof Dodge Center won the weight throw at the Iowa State Classic indoor track and field meet over the weekend.

Hegerle, a Kasson-Mantorville High School grad, is a member of the University of Minnesota men's team. He won the marquee throwing event of the day with a heave of 68 feet, 1 1/2 inches, which was a career best. The mark improves on the Gophers sophomore’s No. 3 ranking in Minnesota history in the event.

Red Wing's Kim Hoveyis a freshman for the University of Minnesota women's indoor track and field team and she is off to a stellar start to her career. Hovey is already among the top two Gophers in both the shot put and discus.

Minnesota's women throwers competed at the Brooks Classic at UW-River Falls this past Saturday and Hovey won the shot put with a toss of 46-8 3/4.

Minnesota hosts the Parents’ Day Open on Saturday in its final tune-up for the Big Ten Championships.

Freshman Aly Meyerof the Rochester Community and Technical College women's basketball team has been named co-MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week for her play this past week. The 6-foot center from Caledonia posted a pair of double-doubles, her 14th and 15th of the season.

Meyer had 31 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Riverland and 16 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Ridgewater. She is currently averaging 15 points and 9.7 rebounds a game for the 14-10 Yellowjackets.

"Aly has been a real consistent player for us this year," Yellowjackets coach Steve Huckesaid. "She is very tough to defend in the post and she continues to improve each game.

The Crossroads College men's basketball team in Rochester won its first conference title since the 2003-04 season with a victory this past weekend.

Crossroads improved to 9-1 and captured the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a victory over Turtle Mount Community College. The NIAC is a six-team conference made up of Christian and community colleges in Minnesota and North Dakota.

Crossroads is 14-8 overall and will be the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament this weekend in Ellendale, N.D.

James Bolincoaches the eight-player squad, which features five seniors. Senior forward Sasha Goncharenko, of Hampton, Minn., leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game. Sophomore Andy Carson, a 6-foot-7 center/forward from Michigan, averages 17 points and 11 rebounds a game while senior guard Patrick Porrasof California averages 11 points a game.

Crossroads has also qualified for the National Association of Christian College Athletics national tournament to be held March 2-5 in Joplin, Mo.

The Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association has announced its 2011 Hall of Fame class. Eight coaches have been selected for induction into the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The only coach honored from the southern part of the state is Mankato Loyola coach Chris Biehn.

The inductees will be honored at a banquet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
