Austin boys golf has trio of seniors back

The Austin Packers boys golf team opened the season Tuesday with a win on the road and that got first-year coach Chris Gogolewski off to a good start.

The Packers have experience coming back with seniors Mark Thorson, Scott Snyder, and Tim Shaffer. Gogolewski will rely on the trio of seniors to keep the Packers competitive in the Big Nine Conference this season, but he also some talented younger golfers on the team.

Alex Thorson, a sophomore, will be a key contributor for the Packers. According to the coach, Isaac Christianson and Tony Baudler, both freshmen, show great potential to fill the fifth and sixth spots for the Packers varsity. Christianson was the meet medalist in the opener against Mankato East.

"There are some younger players that have shown they too can offer scores for varsity matches as the season progresses," Gogolewski said. "Golf is a game of inches, and that can be a good thing for some, and not so good for others."

After starting the season with a couple of road meets, the Packers boys will play their first home meet on Tuesday, Apr. 26, at the Austin Country Club.
