Austin boys lose Big Nine hockey opener

The visiting Owatonna Huskies scored three goals in the first period Tuesday night and went on to beat the Austin Packers 5-1 in a Big Nine Conference boys hockey game at Riverside Arena.

Although the Packers managed to score a goal in the first period, they were down by a 3-1 margin and couldn't erase the early deficit. Owatonna added two more goals in the second period for a 5-1 lead and that's the way the game ended.

Owatonna (3-2, 1-0 Big Nine) controlled the puck in the first period. The Austin boys didn't do well in their special teams play and failed to convert on a pair of two-man advantage power plays.

Dylan Hoium scored Austin’s lone goal on assists from Preston Moe and Tyler Stevens in the first period. Alex Sheldon made 35 saves in goal for the Packers.

Austin (0-2 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) plays at home against the Dodge County Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. The opening face-off in the non-conference game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Riverside Arena.
