Austin girls drop conference opener

It's always a tall order for the Austin Packers to try and compete with the Owatonna Huskies at the net when the two teams meet on the volleyball court.

There was no exception to that rule in Thursday night's Big Nine Conference opener at the Packer Gym. The Huskies dominated at the net to sweep the conference match by scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-9.

"Our girls didn't quite have the same spark as other night against Farmington in the season opener," Austin coach Darica Schneider said. "Owatonna is a very well rounded team and they were able to control the net. They served well and played so smooth on offense."

Statistics for the Packers included: Haley Underwood 2 service aces, 5 digs; Jenny Soiney 7 digs; Kayla Rodgers 10 set assists, 5 digs; Jenna Svoboda 6 set assists, ace block; Meredith Molhusen 7 kills, 2 blocks; and Babaye Oja 4 kills, block.

"The girls were hitting tight, but even with the loss there were some good things on the floor," the coach said. "This is a fun group of girls to work with and they keep playing hard. Hopefully, we can correct some of those mistakes and work hard to get a win."
