Austin girls get off to good start

FARIBAULT — The Austin Packers girls track and field team had several personal best times in the season opener at the Faribault Invitational.

Rochester Mayo finished first in the team scores with 191 points. Faribault was the runner-up and Austin finished fourth with 65 team points.

Madison Overby of Austin placed second in the 3,200 meters. Kaelyn Matthews, a sophomore, ran a personal best in the 400 meters.

"The 4 x 800 relay team won and had a time that was nine seconds faster than the best time we ran all season last year, so very happy with those results," Austin coach Nancy Jones said. "Carolyn Hackel (8th grade) also had a good meet. Her times in the 100, 200, and distance in long jump were all better than her season bests last year."

Darrion Hunt and Abby Snater also had person bests in the triple jump. Hunt's previous best in a meet last year was 30-feet-3.5 inches.

"Overall, when compared to our first meet last year the athletes performances were very good." Jones said. "We have a lot of young athletes that are showing a lot of promise and our returning athletes are competing well."

Austin is scheduled to host a multi-team meet on Saturday at the Gilbertson Track.
