Austin golfers win season opener

MANKATO — The Austin High boys golf team got the season going with a win Tuesday afternoon against Mankato East in a Big Nine Conference dual meet.

Despite a slow start on the course at the Mankato Country Club, the visiting Austin Packers pulled away for a 351-377 win over the East Cougars.

"We started the match rough off the tee," Austin coach Chris Gogolewski said. "I think first competition jitters were with the boys. After they settled in with a few holes, scores came around for the team."

Three of the top four scores for the Packers were in the 80s on the day.

Isaac Christianson of Austin was the meet medalist with a round of 83. Alex and Mark Thorson also shot rounds in the 80s for the Packers.

"Even though we won the match, we know we can play better golf than the scores show," Gogolewski said. "The boys are already to looking forward to our next meet, excited to see improvements in their scores."

Austin (1-0, 1-0 Big Nine) is scheduled to play in a triangular next week at the Eastwood Course in Rochester.
