Auto racing: Big names locked into WMDTC final

SPRING VALLEY — The big-money finale of the fifth annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship has a new format this year.It's also loaded with familiar names up front.

Rodney Sanders, the defending World Modified Dirt Track Champion, will start on the pole in tonight's A Main, which could pay as much as $20,000 to the winner. Sanders, from Happy, Texas, is also the two-time defending USMTS national champion.

SPRING VALLEY — The big-money finale of the fifth annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship has a new format this year.

It's also loaded with familiar names up front.

Tonight's A Main, which will be split into two segments, could be worth $20,000 to one driver.

The winner of the first 25-lap segment will earn $5,000. The second segment, set for 40 laps, will be lined up based on the finishing order of the first segment. The winner will take home at least $15,000.

The front row will have a familiar look.

Defending WMDTC champion and two-time defending United States Modified Touring Series national champion Rodney Sanders will start on the pole. Sanders, from Happy, Texas, finished third in Thursday's preliminary A Main and second in Friday's preliminary A Main.

Drivers earned points on Thursday and Friday nights based on their finishes in time trials, heat races, B Mains and A Mains. The top 12 points earners earned automatic spots in tonight's A Main. The rest of the field will attempt to race their way into the main event.

Sanders was the top points-earner, with 1,272. Thursday night's feature winner, Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., came in second at 1248.5. Medford's Brandon Davis was third with 1,246 points. Those three will make up Row 1 in tonight's A Main.

Friday's feature winner and 2013 WMDTC champion Jason Hughes of Watts, Okla., is also locked into the A Main. Other drivers who qualified for the A Main are Brad Dierks (Clarence, Iowa), Joey Jensen (Harris, Minn.), Lucas Schott (Chatfield), Keith Foss (Winona), Craig Thatcher (Knapp, Wis.), Dan Ebert (Lake Shore, Minn.), Ben Kates (Tonganoxie, Kan.) and Jacob Bleess (Chatfield).
