Balanced Ice Hawks defeat Hudson

Seven different players scored goals as the Rochester Ice Hawks defeated the Hudson (Wis.) Crusaders 7-3 in Minnesota Junior Hockey League play on Friday night.

The host Ice Hawks appeared to be in control in the first period with a 3-1 lead. But the Crusaders scored a short-handed goal in the final minute of the period to close within 3-2.

"I thought we played hard in the first period, but we didn't play very smart," Ice Hawks coach Nick Fatis said. "Come the second period, we wanted to finish off the power play."

The Ice Hawks did score on the power play in the first minute of the second period to stretch the lead to 4-2. George Jackson scored on a nice pass from Shaun Walters, the league's leading scorer.

"Just a beautiful pass and a beautiful play," Fatis said.

The Ice Hawks led 6-3 after two periods and then cruised to victory in the third period, which contained some chippy play.

"We played very strongly in the second period, with a lot of intensity," Fatis said.

Trevor Lloyd had a goal and two assists for Rochester. Also scoring goals for the Ice Hawks were Cory Volk, Morgan Shanchez, Alex Whitney, Trevor Wright and Ivan Zamboj.

Hudson held a 34-28 shot advantage.

The Ice Hawks are now 19-2-0-1 in the MnJHL,  22-2-0-1 overall. The play at Little Falls today at at 7:05 pm. and have a rematch against Hudson on Sunday at 6:10 p.m. in Wisconsin.
