MINNEAPOLIS — John Marshall diver Andrew Barnes competed at the Class AA state meet on Thursday, but did not advance out of the preliminary round.
Each competitor got five dives and then the top 20 advanced to the semifinals later on Thursday. The top 16 through the semifinals advance to Saturday's championship round.
Barnes, a junior, was competing in his first state meet. He had a score of 117.15 through the prelims and finished 27th out of 30 divers.
Section 1AA champion Dan Karnick of Winona was in ninth place heading into Saturday's final.
Rochester swimmers from Century, John Marshall and Mayo will compete in the prelims today. Those who place in the top 16 in each event advance to Saturday's finals. Both swimming sessions begin at 6 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
