Baseball | Austin 15-16, Mayo 7-10

Mayo opened its season by dropping a pair of games to Austin in Big Nine Conference baseball on Tuesday.

The Packers posted the sweep against the host Spartans, winning 15-7 and 16-10.

"Austin played better baseball than us," Mayo coach Tom Senne said. "They were able to make the routine plays and throw strikes. Both teams hit the ball hard all day. We gave up too many big innings and struggled to find outs to stop the bleeding."

Hunter Johnson hit a home run and drove in four runs for the Packers in the opener while Pete Conner scored five runs.

Lucas Jahns went 3-for-4 for Mayo while Evan Kaese was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

In the second game, Andrew Mueller went 3-for-5 with five RBIs while Riley Wempner was also 3-for-5.

Jahns had another three-hit game for Mayo while Kaese went 3-for-4 with four more RBIs. Christopher Serrano Luciano had three RBIs and Sam Warren scored four runs.

"It was a frustrating day, but not one to lose any sleep over," Senne said.

Mayo hosts Owatonna in a doubleheader at Mayo Field at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
