Baseball | Big inning lifts Rockets over Century

Rochester John Marshall broke open a tie game with a nine-run fifth inning, pulling away for a 12-2 Big Nine Conference baseball win over crosstown rival Century on Tuesday at John Adams Middle School.

The Rockets and Panthers were tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. But the Rockets used five walks and seven hits to score nine runs. They added another run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Offense hasn't been an issue for the Rockets (1-1) so far this season. They've scored 20 runs in their first two games.

Alex Belch earned the pitching win. He tossed five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and five walks, while striking out five.

Matthew Dravis pitched a scoreless sixth inning for JM.

Josh Carey took the loss for Century, tossing four innings and allowing three earned runs.

"It was a good game, 2-2 into the bottom of the fifth," JM coach Dutch Heiderscheit said. "Century played well, they just had a tough inning and those happen. Our pitchers did a nice job. And we had some good hitters and today they hit some hard balls."

Logan Saltou, Luke Johnson and Matthew Halverson had two hits apiece for JM. Andrew Schmidt, Brady Meyers and Zach Smith had two RBIs apiece.

Sam Hayward had a hit and an RBI for the Panthers.

JM returns to action at 5 p.m. Thursday at home against Austin, while Century hosts Mayo at 11 a.m. Saturday.
