Baseball: Century holds off Spartans

The Rochester Century baseball team held off an impressive Mayo rally, securing an 8-6 Big Nine Conference on Tuesday at Mayo Field.

The Panthers led 8-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Spartans scored five times in the bottom of the frame to make things interesting.

Nick Smith was fantastic on the hill for Century. He tossed five innings for the victory, allowing just one run on two hits, while striking out eight and walking two.

"He controlled the game for the first five innings," Mayo coach Joe Serratore said. "It's the second game in a row we have trailed by seven runs late and battled back to make it close. ... Both teams struggled defensively, making four errors each."

Erik Thorvilson tossed 1 1/3 innings to earn the save. He struck out two.

Mike Stubbs took the pitching loss for Mayo. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits.

Will Zmolek paced Century at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Jacob Fletcher went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Brandon Knapp added a pair of hits.
