Baseball | Century rallies past Mayo with four-run 6th

Rochester Century rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won 5-3 over Rochester Mayo in a Big Nine Conference baseball game Thursday at Century's field.

Century was coming off an 8-4 win over Rochester John Marshall on Tuesday, and the Panthers won their fifth straight to improve to 9-3 overall and 6-3 in conference. Mayo is 6-7 and 3-6.

"This was a big win for our program," said Century coach JD Bickle. "We respect Mayo and they are a very good team."

Erik Thorvilson pitched a complete game allowing 12 hits and two earned runs for the win. Brandon Knapp was 3-for-4 to lead Century's nine-hit attack.

For Mayo, Jared Campbell went 3-for-3. Losing pitcher Michael Michalak allowed six hits and five earned runs through five innings.

"Michalak pitched a good game (for Mayo) and he is a great competitor," Bickle said.

"Thorvilson has been our work horse for the last two years now and is a great competitor, too. Unfortunately we have not given him great run support so it was nice that we battled back after going down 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning."

Century and Mayo are both home on Monday for conference games, Century against John Marshall again, and Mayo versus Mankato East.
