Baseball: Century splits with Mankato West

Rochester Century split a Big Nine Conference baseball doubleheader with Mankato West on Thursday night.

West scored six runs in the first inning and grabbed 9-3 win in Game 1.

The Scarlets had four consecutive hits to start the game.

Century never was able to crawl back in it. Riese Zmolek led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-4.

Ross Luinenberg took the loss on the mound. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed six runs on six hits.


Marvin Breuer pitched the final 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out one.

The Panthers came back and secured a 6-4 victory in Game 2.

Nick Smith pitched a complete game to secure the win. He allowed four runs on seven hits, while walking four and striking out two.

Jordan Jasik had a big game at the plate for the Panthers. He went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Jasik is hitting .500 this season and now has 20 stolen bases.

Josh Newman added a hit, an RBI and a stolen base. Zmolek smacked a two-RBI double for a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning.

The Panthers are now 9-6 in Big Nine play and 9-6 overall, while West is 12-5 overall and 11-5 in the Big Nine. Century plays again today at home against Winona.
