Baseball | JM, Red Wing split wild doubleheader

John Marshall and Red Wing played a pair of wild Big Nine Conference baseball games on Saturday and the teams ended up splitting a wild doubleheader.

JM won a 6-5 back-and-forth affair in eight innings in the opener before Red Wing bounced back to win a wild 19-16 slugfest in the nightcap.

Red Wing scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead in the opener. JM tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh and then won the game with a run in the eighth.

JM received good production from the bottom of the order in the opener. No. 7, 8 and 9 hitters Sam Moen, Grant Heller and Luke Ranfranz were all 1-for-3. Moen drove in two runs and scored two while Heller and Ranfranz both had an RBI. Jake Halvorson and Zach Smith both had two hits and an RBI.

Ty Buck hit a homer and a double and drove in two runs for Red Wing.


The second game featured 35 runs, 35 hits and 10 errors.

Tait Kelly hit a home run and drove in three runs for Red Wing, Zach Collins had three hits and three RBIs, Buck had two doubles and two RBIs and Dixon Irwin also had two hits and two RBIs.

Red Wing's production overshadowed a huge game by JM's Luke Ranfranz. Ranfranz went 5-for-6 with a home run a double and six RBIs.

Luke Johnson was 4-for-5 for JM while Alex Belch, the winning pitcher in the first game, had three RBIs and Jackson Miller added two.
