Mayo got down early and never could bounce all the way back as it fell to Mankato West 9-5 in Big Nine Conference baseball Monday.
The Spartans outhit the Scarlets 11-7, but eight walks and three hit batters did them in. West led 9-1 after four innings.
Mayo had a great threat going in the sixth after pulling within 9-5. But it left the bases loaded, with its final two batters both taking third strikes. Mayo also left the bases loaded in the fifth.
Kyle VanWettering had three hits for Mayo.
